RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis Mods

As part of the RTFKT team, I led a design session with fellow designers to create custom mods for the RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis, a reimagined classic built for gamers, creators, and collectors. These custom mods were designed for various personalities and aesthetics, with a focus on modularity, allowing users to swap attachments and personalize their sneakers in ways never seen before.

Our team was responsible for taking these designs from concept to 3D production, ensuring each mod was meticulously crafted for in-hand product delivery. I worked on the full design journey, from initial sketches to 3D design, and took those assets through the 3D printing process, delivering a tangible and collectible product that gamers, creators, and sneakerheads could hold and wear.

ABOUT THE

RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis

This unique collaboration merges the physical and digital worlds, where each pair of sneakers comes equipped with modular, 3D-printable attachments and an NFC chip unlocking a digital experience. Gamers and creators can customize their shoes with removable mods and interchangeable vial attachments, giving them the freedom to express their style.

The Dunk Genesis was premiered at ComplexCon 2023 at the RTFKT x Nike Dunk Labs, and the VOID pairs were dropped exclusively via the Nike SNKRS app. As part of the project, we provided 3D files so creators could design and print their own mods, further encouraging user participation and creativity.

Design and Features:

The RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis boasts a futuristic aesthetic with laser-etched details, space laces, and bio-based PU trim to create exaggerated angles, adding depth and dimension.
It features customizable components like detachable tongue clips and heel shields, offering even more flexibility for personal expression.
With the embedded NFC chip, users could unlock digital counterparts of their physical sneakers, bridging the gap between the real world and the digital realm.
The modularity and personalization weren’t just in the mods—users could also download game-ready 3D files to create unique attachments for their sneakers, blurring the line between gaming, fashion, and digital art.

By merging futuristic materials with cutting-edge technology, we successfully pushed the boundaries of sneaker design for the digital generation. The project reflects RTFKT’s mission to combine gaming, fashion, and culture into immersive experiences for creators across the world.

VALKYRIE MOD

4-PIECE SET

The Valkyrie Mod Set draws inspiration from the fierce Norse Valkyries, embodying their legendary power and symbolism. This four-piece set brings mythological elements to life through futuristic RTFKT design.

Heel Mod:
The standout feature, the heel mod, boasts RTFKT’s signature tech wings, representing the Valkyries’ fabled wings. These sleek, high-tech additions add a sense of motion and strength, visually echoing the power and protection associated with Valkyries.
Tongue Mod: The tongue mod is adorned with a Valkyrie-styled helmet, complete with smaller, tech-styled wings that pay homage to traditional depictions of the Valkyries' headgear, capturing a sense of authority and warrior spirit.
Wing Clips: Extending along the sides, the wing clips take inspiration from the Valkyries’ helmet neck guards, creating a streamlined look that’s both protective and stylish, with a modern twist.

DEATH STRANDING TRIBUTE

The From Below mod set is a tribute to legendary game designer Hideo Kojima, whose boundary-pushing narratives and immersive worlds have been a lasting source of inspiration in my own journey as a designer. Kojima’s groundbreaking work leaves a profound impact, so this set was crafted with admiration for his creativity and sense of wonder. Designed as a showcase piece, the From Below mod embodies the haunting, surreal themes that Death Stranding so vividly brings to life.

Tongue Mod: Drawing directly from Death Stranding, the tongue mod features Higgs’ ominous mask at the center, with countless “strands” extending outward, wrapping around the sneaker as if they were emerging from the tar. Each strand is a lifeline, twisted and spiraling to form a stylized swoosh, with hands reaching out from the dark, amplifying the feeling of being drawn into the unknown. This design captures the unsettling yet captivating aura that Death Stranding is known for, highlighting the themes of connection and isolation.
Heel Mod: The heel mods further dive into Kojima’s iconography. One mod features the Odradek, a device from Death Stranding used to detect BTs, with its intricate mechanical arms and directional spikes paying homage to the game’s unique world-building elements. The second mod is a mini Luden, Kojima Productions’ iconic mascot, symbolizing exploration and the spirit of adventure that defines Kojima’s work.

NEW JEANS MOD

1 SET PER MEMBER

Created for the global K-pop sensation NewJeans, this custom mod set is a playful tribute to the group's unique style and dedicated fanbase. Known for their genre-blending sound, vintage-inspired aesthetic, and dynamic visuals, NewJeans has captivated fans worldwide with their refreshing take on pop music. Their chart-topping hits and trailblazing approach to digital content have quickly solidified them as a groundbreaking force in the K-pop industry, and they continue to push the boundaries of what fans expect from an idol group.

Heel Mod: Each tongue mod features a unique Powerpuff-inspired character representing a different member of NewJeans. This nod to the iconic animated series highlights NewJeans' youthful energy, bold style, and the individuality each member brings to the group. The Powerpuff theme reflects their playful vibe while also showcasing their strong personalities and fearless approach to music and performance.
Tongue Mod: For the heel mod, we recreated the Bunny, a symbol from their Binky Bong lightstick and a visual icon for their fanbase, affectionately called “Bunnies.” The Bunny icon, paired with NewJeans lettering, serves as a unifying symbol of their dedicated community, embodying the loyalty, enthusiasm, and creativity that NewJeans inspires in their fans across the globe.

UNDERWORLD WINGS MOD

1-PIECE

The UNDRWRLD WINGS mod draws inspiration from the iconic Clone X back trait of the same name. This heel mod was created as a fun, accessible piece, meant to be a simple example of that was provided to the Clone X community during our Dunk Mod challenge. Sleek yet striking, this design gives the sneaker a fun ethereal, winged appearance.

CONCLUSION

The Dunk Mods Project showcased the incredible potential of customization, blending art, technology, and community engagement. Each mod set served as a unique expression, turning the RTFKT x Nike Dunk silhouette into a dynamic platform for storytelling and innovation. By integrating modular design and 3D production, the project empowered creators and fans to bring their visions to life, merging digital creativity with tangible craftsmanship.
