Hey Everyone,

Happy New Year!, I know I’m late to the party but I have arrived.

Pre-Development has begun for this upcoming PC title. The guys and I have been hammering out concepts and writing the story and events for this game. It is looking awesome at the moment and it something that we really believe that market will enjoy.

I’m not to to spill too many details as of yet, that will slowly surface. We are code naming this new piece “Project Silver Otter” as in, “it has absolutely nothing to do with that but we need something to call it for the mean time.”

This project will be utilizing the Unreal Development Kit to bring it to life. I’ve been already knocking out some of the block out for the levels and have begun developing assets to populate the world. Game mechanics and play style are currently being programmed. The writing is coming in massive chunks. The proof of concept has already been built. We are moving at a great pace thats for sure.

I wish I could show you all some of the awesome concept, models and levels that are being developed at the moment but that will have to wait a bit.

More info on this soon. Sorry no screenshot in this post.

I love creating environments! Its such a rewarding process to start off with a tiny idea and have it manifest into the wild task that it turns out to be.

This is a simple project that I started in my effort to learn CryEngine 3. At the moment its very simple and a ton will change as I create the models and start to populate the space. I have some neat ideas for this space and they will unravel with time. Like I said this is a very early setup.

There are some great things about the CryEngine but I really do miss my Unreal 3 Material editor. I know the CryEngine has made some great looking materials, I’m just not fully used to it yet. I’ll get there. It’s been a great learning experience and there’s a lot more learning to be had.

For now here are a few screen shots. I’ll be updating as this project progresses.

There’s a lot of learning going around. With technology changing all the time that’s something that in our industry will always be.

Gotta love learning something new. It’s a great feeling jumping into a new set of tools and seeing what awesome thing you can create. This past week I’ve been diving into CryEngine 3 and the will be the latest engine I add to my arsenal. You can expect some new environments from me very soon.

So far its going great and the CryEngine has a great deal of creation tools. Being and UDK and 3DS Max user the controls were pretty easy to get accustomed to. I do enjoy UDK’s navigation controls over CryEngine but it’s so similar to 3DS MAx that it comes as second nature.

Anyways I’ve been working on new environment and using it as a learning project. I’m expanding my use of softwares as well as expanding my workflow. I find that switching things up keeps me on my toes and also helps me see things in a new light. Switching up workflow changes the way you think about the design process which opens you up to a new world or solutions. I’m normally a hardcore Zbrush user but for this project I’m using Mudbox and 3D Coat to change it up.

I want to try and update my blog more frequently. Sometimes time just doesn’t allow for it. There’s a lot of good things happening and many changes that are taking place. It’s been busy, busy.

Til the next one,

Hey guys,

Here’s a short creative writing story for a character concept I thought about a while ago. Hope you enjoy.

2035

The rain cries from the heavens as the air is infected by the fragrance of blood. Another village was being wiped clean. The small stationary wooden huts, which once sheltered a community, were being destroyed and burned to the ground. The dense pieces of lumber shrieked as the fire incinerated their bodies. Thick black smoke bathes through the air marking the area as a sanitation zone. Cries and screams showered the falling village as its people’s lives were stolen.

There she was, roaming the battlefield, terrorizing her victims as she slaughtered them like beasts. A cloth-like suit is all that encased her body, black to unify her with the shadows of the night. All her emotions veiled by the fabric that enveloped her face. As if she was mechanical and programmed to operate, she wanders the battlefield in search of her next target.

The faces of her victims explode with feelings of pain, suffering and horror. Her game from person to person begins to speed up, each new face carrying a more intense and disturbing image. Blood spilled stains the sky as she slices through the forest of bodies. With her palette only consisting of crimson, she fills her canvas.

Men and women, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, all taken with no remorse. Faster and faster, person to person, until at last there was only one. A sharp gaze from the man, not a day older than thirty, locks in with her. An eye whose icy blue color once flourished with life, now gradually falls to the ground. The window to his soul slowly shuts.

On this plain she is known by her field name, Fear. This was derived from her obsession to strike and play with the fear of her prey as she finishes them off. But she was not always this way. She was once known as Nadia Shaw, a cheerful little village girl.

But in the year 2020, bio warfare became a term common in dialogue. The greatest minds of the time were put to the test. By 2022, in an effort to end the massive war that was ripping the world apart, a decision was made to mobilize bio weapons and bring the war to an end. The war did indeed end, and with it so did the lives of millions, men, women, and children alike. The virus that was developed was completely unstable and evolved at an excessive rate braking from the confinements of human control. The virus spread like an epidemic, taking the lives of all it came in contact with. Most victims were taken within hours.

With this tragedy, came those who wanted to exploit it for power. Small units began to sprout up like weeds throughout the world. During these times Nadia’s village became one of the places that were struck by attack. Soldiers ravaged through her community destroying and killing those who chose not to join them.

With a last hope of survival, Nadia’s father took her in his arms and ran. He ran until his legs began to fill with the burning sensation of pain. His muscles were screaming in agony but he kept on pushing. Nadia, looking behind, saw the soldiers getting closer and closer as the worn muscles of her father began to give in. A loud noise fills her small ears as she hears her father let out a roar of pain. A red liquid begins to pour out of his legs as he tumbles to the ground. Her father’s arms still clenched tightly to her. He tells her to forget about him and run but her innocent heart could not bear to leave him. She was just a child.

Two soldiers appear in her line of sight. As she tries to run, the end of one of the rifles strikes her in the back of the neck and she cascades to the ground. Indistinct images filled her eyes just as they shut and all faded to black.

She woke in a dark room. The aroma of decay filled her nose. She tried to get up but quickly stumbled to her knees. The ground was filled with a thick liquid. It was blood. She began screaming and panicking. She could not see her father anywhere. It was only her in that enclosed murky area. Hours passed and her fragile mind was beginning to lose sense of reality. The odor only got stronger, the room seemed to get smaller, and the ocean of blood seemed to grow deeper.

The corridors and passages of her mind were slowly isolating her innocence. She no longer needed that if she was going to survive. Door after door, her mind closed off everything that was not deemed necessary for her to carry on. Every door sealed shut and only one remained, revenge.

She was but a child and those harsh conditions were enough to turn anyone insane. A week passed and the once stench of blood now fills her nose as the sweet smell of flowers. A sound penetrates though the other side of the wall, a soldier. This was her chance. She patiently waited for the door to be opened. Sheltered in blood she hid against one of the walls. The lock began to unlatch and the door slowly crept open. Dead silence filled the room. The soldier takes a few steps in. She detected a blade kept on the lower right of his leg. That would be her means of escape. A few more steps and she was off. She didn’t need the light to see where she was, every inch of that place was engraved in her head. She pushed the soldier’s leg making him slip on the steamy blood that coated the floor beneath them and grabbed the blade off of him. The soldier not able to see, swung his arms violently in an attempt to catch her. No success. She ran to his side and smashed the blade in to his leg, ripping it open and letting the blood flow free. She did it again and again. Let the crimson flow just as they did to her father. Nadia ran though the room piercing the soldier though out his body. Blood filled the air but that did not stop her. The soldier’s scream played as a melody in her ears. New soldiers came in the room. Her canvas quickly filled.

Man after man they all fell to the beast, no longer a child but a creature of death. In the midst of night her canvas was complete and her symphony was finished. Fifteen soldiers were killed. She educed fear to those who captured her and took away everything that she once had. These soldiers were taught to exterminate with no mercy. No feelings, no emotion, only that one desire to kill and that is exactly what she did. She enjoyed it.

Twelve years has passed since that day and the little girl once known as Nadia Shaw is no longer here. Her mind has been fully taken over by the rage and fear that ate her from within. All the repulsion that she went through and all that she lost set this to be the outcome. Now she wonders the battlefield striking terror and fear into all of her victims. She lives and breathes war. Known as the bringer of terror and carrier of death, she is, Fear.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten the chance to post anything. Lots of project that I’m currently working on that have been taking up all my time as usual. Nothing to complain at, at all. I love it It just makes updating things a little harder. I’ll try to get caught up on here

By the way you can follow me on instagram or twitter, both @jarlanperez , I usually post progress of things here and there on those. You can contact me on twitter anytime pretty much

This is a mobile scene that I was contracted to create for an Indie Studio (BadBot Games) This is one of the fighting levels that will be featured in their upcoming Mobile fighting game.

The scene sits at a little over 1400 polys and is assembled in UDK.
